In the face of global climate change and the challenge of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, the demand for green collar talent in enterprises has significantly increased. National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) has announced the signing of an industry-academia cooperation memorandum with Singapore-based carbon management company Cedars Digital. This partnership aims to integrate academic resources and digital technology to establish a talent cultivation base for carbon management in the Asia-Pacific region, providing critical solutions for the net-zero transition.
International Trends Driving Change: From the Paris Agreement to Global Supply Chain Carbon Reduction Pressure
The 2015 Paris Agreement established the 2050 net-zero target, and COP28 in 2023 further decided to “gradually phase out fossil fuels,” accelerating global carbon reduction efforts. To meet the 2030 interim targets, international brands are extending carbon reduction pressure to their supply chains, forcing enterprises to rapidly adopt carbon management tools. Professor Hsin-Cheng Yeh from NTNU’s Graduate Institute of Environmental Education and Sustainable Management pointed out, “Carbon reduction has shifted from a vision to a timed mission, and enterprises urgently need professionals who can integrate science, policy, and practice.”
Strong Industry-Academia Collaboration: Carbon Management Courses × Digital Practical Platform
This collaboration combines NTNU’s academic strength with Cedars Digital’s technological advantages to create a unique cultivation model. The courses cover climate science, international carbon reduction and disclosure policies and frameworks (such as TCFD, SBTi, CDP, RE100), relevant domestic and international climate regulations, carbon inventory practices (ISO 14064-1, ISO 14067, etc.), corporate carbon management practices, and in-depth analysis of the EU and Taiwan’s sustainable classification systems, enhancing students’ ability to comprehensively apply various management tools.
To deepen practical operations, NTNU has introduced Cedars Digital’s self-developed AI carbon management platform “CarbonM.” Through simulating real enterprise cases, students can fully practice from carbon inventory, emission reduction strategy planning to carbon neutrality pathway design, combining climate finance knowledge and digital tool applications to enhance their practical problem-solving skills. NTNU Vice President Dr. Kun-Ming Chen emphasized, “This collaboration is not only a cross-border integration of academia and industry but also aims to create a seamless transition from classroom to workplace. Through internships and corporate projects, students can connect with international net-zero trends in advance, becoming immediate assets to the industry.”
Cultivating Future Green Collar Talent: Internships, Certifications, Employment – A Three-Pronged Approach, Education as the Key Engine for Net Zero
Torrent Chin, CEO of Cedars Digital, stated that priority will be given to offering summer internship opportunities to students enrolled in the courses. Outstanding performers may also receive subsidies for carbon management certification and pre-offers, targeting the demand for “ready-to-use talent” in enterprises, helping students quickly transition to popular positions such as carbon consultants and ESG specialists. Despite global political fluctuations, the carbon reduction trend led by international brands in supply chains is irreversible. The collaboration between NTNU and Cedars Digital responds to the United Nations’ initiative of “Education as the core of climate action,” cultivating green collar talent with scientific literacy and technological application capabilities, building sustainable competitiveness for the Asia-Pacific region.
Cedars Digital will also serve as a lecturer at the Northern Region Green Collar Talent Cultivation Center hosted by NTNU’s Ministry of Environment, providing students with the latest international carbon management technology information. The two parties plan to cultivate over a thousand carbon management professionals within three years and expand cooperation with academic and research institutions in Southeast Asia, promoting the alignment of international carbon management standards. With the full implementation of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in 2025, this net-zero collaboration in education and technology will become a crucial pivot for Taiwan to connect with the international green economy.
